Herculaneum

The ruins of Herculaneum tell its visitors the evolution of an ancient and beautiful city founded by the Greeks on the shores of the sea, fell successively under the domination of Sunni and transformed finally, as Roman town of Herculaneum. Already seriously damaged by the earthquake of 62 AD, the city was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius (79 AD), who covered her with a huge mass of mud, ash and other eruptive materials from rainwater that dragged, solidified into a compact layer and hard of 15-20 meters. Herculaneum unlike Pompeii was pervaded by hot clouds, which have allowed the preservation of wooden structures and small objects better than it has been to Pompeii. The archaeological excavations of Herculaneum, have always been famous destination for thousands of tourists every year, and were included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
